In recent articles we have celebrated the 2025 season’s national success of our Over 60 First XI. It is time to recognise some outstanding individual achievements by a number of our players. Four of them have been selected for national honours, and they are: Matt Bashford, our Over 50s first XI captain, who has been invited to tour the U.A.E. in February/March with the Over 50s England Lions. Martyn Gidley captained the England Over 50s during the summer; Nick Newman featured this year in several Ashes games against the Australian tourists and Zaheer Mohamed has been invited to tour India with the England Over 60s Lions in 2026. These are terrific achievements and we send out congratulations for past performances and best wishes for the up and coming international series.
There might not be much action on the field during the close-season, but the various committees connected to the seniors’ set-up have been working hard in preparation for 2026. In fact a number of events and activities are lined up between now and then, and these include our A.G.M. on 7th January. This will be the first such meeting since we came under the banner of the LRCCC Foundation, whose help and support have been invaluable during our inaugural season. On Friday 6th February we will hold the annual dinner and presentation evening at Beedles Lake Golf Club, an event that has always gone down well with our members. In between those dates we will start the 2026 campaign by blowing off the winter cobwebs in the indoor nets at Grace Road, starting on Friday 9th January, bright and early at 9am “ 11am. In addition to this action, on Wednesday 7th January, we once again begin the popular indoor cricket at Sports Leagues, Freemen’s Common from 12.30pm. So there’s plenty to look forward to even before we get out onto the grass.
The fixtures for the national seniors’ competitions will be published in the spring and it is at that point when we will be looking to arrange our home fixtures at a number of club grounds around the county. If you would like your club to be considered as a host ground please get in touch in the first instance at secretary.lrcccs@gmail.com.
