Leicestershire fan and former member of the Royal Army Medical Core Bernard Warner will be part of a guard of honour tomorrow at Uptonsteel County Ground as the Foxes embark on their defence of the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
To mark the defence of the 50-over title, which the Club won in September 2023 at Trent Bridge, Mr Warner, 90, will represent Leicestershire CCC and hand back the trophy to the ECB on the day. Supporting Mr Warner will be Armed Forces Regiments with service personnel, providing a guard of honour.
Mr Warner, a Foxes fan for more than 77 years, began following the Club in 1947, witnessing Leicestershire against Northamptonshire on his maiden trip to Grace Road. He highlights David Gower, Ray Illingworth, Phil Simmons, and Stuart Broad as some of his favourite Foxes throughout the years, while Mr Warner was also lucky enough to watch Sir Donald Bradman play in 1948.
Commenting, Sean Jarvis, CEO at Leicestershire CCC said: “Winning the trophy last summer was a brilliant occasion for the county, especially as it had been over a decade since we won some silverware, but the time has now come for us to hand it back. We wanted to really celebrate the 12 months we have had it in our possession and we could think of no one better than Bernard to represent us.â€
As part of the day, which sees gates open at 9:30am, there will dedicated Armed Forces shows at the ground, including a military vehicle signal display and an experiential military radio tent.
Leicestershire County Cricket Club wishes to extend its thanks to those who served and still serve in the Armed Forces, and we can't wait to welcome some of you to Uptonsteel County Ground.
Tickets for Wednesday's game against Notts Outlaws can be found HERE and on the gate.
