Profiling A T20 Champion | Ben Cox

As we countdown to the start of Leicestershire’s push for T20 trophy number four, we’re shining the spotlight on some of the Foxes’ most likely match-winners. First up, our god with the gloves, Ben Cox.

A proven T20 champion, Ben brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to Uptonsteel County Ground as he embarks on his first Blast campaign in the green of Leicestershire.

PLAY STYLE:

Arriving from Worcestershire in the winter, the former Rapids star adds a wave of new energy and talent to the Foxes’ T20 ranks. Not only with the bat, but with the gloves too.

An assured presence behind the stumps, Ben’s exuberance is set to both inspire and energise his teammates and Foxes fans alike.

His agility and alacrity will test any batter’s bottle “ with one misguided dance down the wicket almost inevitably leading to Ben mercilessly whipping off the bails.

With the bat, he fuses cool composure and exceptional middle-order firepower. Ben is an expert player of spin in the middle phase of the innings and a clinical finisher at the death.

STATS BOOK:

A seasoned T20 star, Ben has amassed a whopping 2,359 runs in the format to date. The ‘keeper-batter averages a healthy 25.92 while striking at 125.14 from his 156 matches.

Ben’s T20 best came in 2021 against the Yorkshire Vikings, clubbing a brutal 61 not out from just 37 deliveries. The Foxes will certainly hope he can replicate that kind of form in 2024’s opening battle versus the Vikings at Uptonsteel County Ground.

Widely recognised as one of the best ‘keepers in the country, Ben’s razor-sharp reflexes earned him 102 dismissals for his former side, claiming 68 catches and 34 stumpings.

HERO HIGHLIGHT:

Undoubtedly the pinnacle of Ben’s T20 career, the Foxes’ new number 7 fired Worcestershire to their maiden T20 title with man-of-the-match performances in both the semi-final and final on 2018 Finals Day. An achievement never done before, and never repeated since.

After booking his spot in the final with a cool 55 not out, Ben went on to take down two of England’s finest exponents of death bowling “ Jorfa Archer and Chris Jordan “ in the showpiece event.

He deposited both for massive maximums into the Edgbaston crowd in the dying embers, as his unbeaten 46 from only 27 balls guided the Rapids to glory.

A masterclass in performing under intense pressure, Ben’s knocks that day will live long in Vitality Blast folklore.

KEY CLASH:

A one-club man until last September, there’ll be a lot of attention on Ben’s first fixture against his home county. The Foxes will be hoping the wicketkeeper-batter comes back to haunt Worcestershire when the two sides meet at Uptonsteel County Ground on Sunday, 9 June.

Now ready to don Foxes T20 colours for the first time, Ben’s vast experience, dynamic playstyle, and ability to deliver under pressure will be instrumental to the Club’s pursuit of a record-breaking fourth T20 trophy.

A batter that can dispatch deliveries to all parts of the ground and a former champion with a fresh quest for glory, Ben is certainly a match-winner to marvel at this summer.
