With just 44 days to go until Leicestershire’s 2024 campaign kicks off, the hard work at Uptonsteel County Ground is ramping up.
However, half a dozen Foxes stars have been continuing their winter’s progress in warmer climes before they link up with the squad next month. Let’s take a look at their recent form:
Will Pucovski:
Leicestershire’s newest recruit had a weekend to remember, hitting his seventh first-class century during Victoria’s draw with New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield.
Batting at three, Pucovski churned out a gritty 131 from 302 deliveries during a mammoth 200-run partnership with Victoria and soon-to-be Leicestershire teammate, Peter Handscomb.
Peter Handscomb:
No stranger to a hundred, Handscomb brought up the 22nd red-ball century of his illustrious career in the same innings as Pucovski.
A single off Nathan Lyon took the Australian international to a 208-ball ton, before he eventually fell for 114. His stand with Pucovski lasted 73.3 overs, as the two battled it out to post a huge total despite a slow-pitch.
Wiaan Mulder:
Turning 26 on Monday, Mulder has had a few reasons to celebrate recently. On the pitch, he blitzed a superb 141 from just 128 balls, top scoring for the Lions in their draw with Rocks at the New Wanderers.
His return to 4-day cricket followed a stunning SA20 campaign in which the South African all-rounder registered 297 runs at 37.13, including three half-centuries. His runs, amassed at a lightning quick strike rate of 157.14, fired Durban Super Giants to the final “ where Mulder top scored with 38 (22) but saw his side fall by 89 runs to Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Rehan Ahmed:
Leicestershire’s Academy graduate is once again catching the eye in the international arena. Currently in action for England on their five-match Test tour of India, Ahmed is the fourth highest wicket-taker in the series (11) and England’s second highest behind Tom Hartley.
With England 2-1 down in the series, he’s set to return to action on Friday morning in Ranchi.
Liam Trevaskis:
After winning the WA Premier Cricket T20 title in December, winter signing Liam Trevaskis is continuing to play a key role Down Under for Midland-Guildford CC.
The left-arm spinner, who arrived from Durham, has taken a further 23 wickets at 26.39 in WA Premier Cricket, as well as recording 223 runs batting in various spots across the order.
Scott Currie:
After concluding his spell with Adelaide University in the SACA Premier Cricket, Scott Currie received his maiden call-up to represent Scotland.
The Hampshire-loanee has been selected for four ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 fixtures against Canada and the UAE in Dubai, beginning on 1 March. He will link up with the Foxes at the end of the tour.
