Rain Halts Budinger and Swindells Charge

By Pete Johnson

Only 9.5 overs were possible, but Sol Budinger and Harry Swindells put on a quickfire 73 on a truncated second day of the SEC fixture against Yorkshire at Scarborough CC.

On day one, play was abandoned at 1.30pm due to rain. On day two play did not commence until 4pm owing to a wet outfield. Just 9.5 overs could be played however, before rain forced the umpires to take the players from the field at 4.51pm.

Trialists Clark Haddrell, and Julius Sumerauer making their debut for our 2nd XI. Harry Swindells skippered the Foxes, his opposite number Will Luxton won the toss for Yorkshire, and invited Leicestershire to bat.

Sam Evans and Sol Budinger opened the innings, but Evans (0) was caught at short leg by Noah Kelly off the bowling of Ben Cliff from the second delivery of the innings.

Harry Swindells joined Budinger, and the pair scored freely. A 50 partnership was posted, at under a run a ball (46b), including Budinger hitting seamer Dom Leech over one of the stands, and out of the ground, for a maximum.

Budinger could in fact be the face of British Rail in an advertising campaign, as he always appears to have a train to catch when at the crease.

Swindells meanwhile was quietly going about his business taking 4 boundaries off the Tykes attack. Thus enabling me to accomplish a challenge I set myself by making reference to the word quiet, and Swindells, in the same sentence.

At 4.51pm rain began to fall, and the payers left the field. Leicestershire 73-1 from 9.5 overs. Budinger (33*) 31b, Swindells (30*) 31b. Leicestershire’s score could well have been somewhat higher as the ball often ‘plugged’ on parts of the outfield, when normally it would have scurried to the rope.

After much discussion between umpires, coaches, captains, and groundstaff, play was abandoned for the day at 5.45pm.
