Robin Gardner 1934-2023

Leicestershire CCC is saddened to learn of the passing of former batsman Leslie Robin Gardner, who has died at the age of 89.

Affectionally known as Bob, the entertaining right-hander played 126 first-class matches for Leicestershire between 1954 and 1962, scoring more than 4,000 runs.

He joined the Leicestershire 'Nursery' (Academy) staff in 1951, before spending two years on 'National Service'. Bob later made his first-class debut for the Club against Cambridge University in 1954.

The highlight of his career came in June 1961, when he scored a prestigious century batting at number five against the touring Australians at Grace Road. Bob was subsequently rewarded with the award of his county cap.

Statistically, 1959 was Bob’s best season when he scored precisely 1,000 runs at 27.77. He was also a member of the team that played in the 'Midland Counties Knockout Cup', essentially a trial tournament for the Gillette Cup that started a year later.

Featuring alongside current Club President Jack Birkenshaw, Bob top scored with 56 in the final against Northamptonshire at Grace Road.

After leaving Leicestershire at the end of the 1962 season, Bob went on to feature for Hertfordshire, making sixteen appearances between 1964 and 1965.

An adept sportsman, Bob also played football for Hereford United.

Bob’s funeral will be held on 27th October at North Oxford Crematorium from 12pm “ 1pm.
