Leicestershire County Cricket Club is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Robin Matthews at the age of 81, following a short illness.
Robin's remarkable 54-year affiliation with Leicestershire began in 1971 when he joined from Oxfordshire after seven seasons playing Minor Counties cricket. As a formidable right-arm bowler, he took 55 wickets during his three-year tenure with the Foxes, highlighted by his career-best performance of 7/51 against Sussex in 1972.
Club Chair, John Thorpe, added: “Everyone at Leicestershire CCC would like to extend their deepest sympathies to Robin’s wife, Joan, as well all of Robin’s family and friends."
After his professional playing career, Robin continued to contribute to local cricket, playing for Leicester Nomads CC and Lutterworth CC, and serving on various club committees. In 2011, he was appointed to Leicestershire’s Board of Directors, where he served with great distinction for 10 years before becoming an Advisor to the Board on governance and business-related policies and procedures.
Robin also played a pivotal role in the merger of the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Board with the Club in 2016, serving on the Board of Management of the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket Foundation.
Robin Matthews' legacy and contributions to Leicestershire CCC will be remembered fondly. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
