Leicestershire totally commanded day two with both bat and ball at Newport CC, putting themselves very much in the ‘box seat’.
County progressed their overnight score from 246-6 to 396 all out. Harry Swindells making 119, and Nat Bowley 98. In reply, Glamorgan were dismissed for 128, Sam Wood returning figures of 5-33. Swindells, Bowley, and Wood all with career best scores, and bowling figures respectively in the SEC.
Glamorgan were asked to follow on, closing on 20-1, needing a further 248 runs to avoid an innings defeat.
Due to early morning rain play did not commence until 11.15am, with 104 overs scheduled for the day, so as to make up for some of the time lost on day one.
Foxes resumed on 246-6, Swindells 82*, Bowley 40*. In the third over of the morning Swindells and Bowley brought up their 100 partnership (169b). Three overs later, Bowley went to his 50 (6x4) 101b when he glanced seamer Ben Morris for a boundary down to long leg.
Swindells then went to his 100 (10x4/2x6) 148b, a couple of overs later when he turned Morris behind square leg for two. A chanceless innings from Swindells. After an hour’s play in the morning, Swindells and Bowley posted their 150 partnership (264b). The total now on 308-6 from 82.4 overs.
Glamorgan took the new ball, mid over, after 84.3 overs, following a maximum from Swindells. The Swindler’s attritional, and majestic innings came to an end when he was adjudged lbw to a delivery from Zain ul Hassan. Swindells 119 (10x4/3x6) 199b. Leicestershire 324-7 from 87.2 overs. Swindells and Bowley having added 168 for the 7th wicket.
County into Lunch on 351-7 from 93 overs. Bowley 89* Julius Sumerauer 15*. In the third over after Lunch Bowley and Sumerauer brought up their 50 Partnership at just under a run a ball (49b).
When the score had reached 376, Bowley (98) 176b was cruelly denied a thoroughly merited, and deserved century when he dragged a delivery from pace bowler Aman Rao onto his stumps. Bowley registering his highest score in the SEC.
It is a tough call to say who looked the most disappointed Bowley upon being dismissed for 98 or Tottenham Hotspur Manager Ange Postecoglou at the final whistle at the King Power on Monday night!
After Bowley’s dismissal, a further 20 runs were added. Sumerauer (44) 41b another Leicestershire player making his highest score in the SEC. Pip Jackson (2) and Liam Tew (5*). Leicestershire 396 all out from 103.4 overs.
Glamorgan
commenced their reply at 2.48pm and were soon reduced to 32-4 after 12.5 overs.
Sam Wood charging in from ‘the Steelworks End’ having both openers, Amir Khan
and Calum Nicholls, caught behind by keeper Swindells.
Wood followed this up by having Henry Hurle caught at 2nd slip by Rishi Patel. Fellow opening bowler Pip Jackson also claiming a wicket trapping Tom Bevan in front. Glamorgan into Tea on 43-4 from 15 overs.
In the first over after Tea, medium pacer Liam Tew had Harry Friend lbw. Glamorgan Skipper Zain ul Hassan and Lewis Popple then provided some resistance, posting a 50 partnership from 69b, the score on 93-5. ul Hassan then brought up his 50 (5x4/2x6) 58b, the score on 108-5 from 30.5 overs.
That was as good as it got for Glamorgan however, as they then lost a further five wickets for just 23 runs. Popple (23) was bowled by Sumerauer. Owen Davidson (1) was then dismissed in the same manner by Sumerauer.
Wood then returned to the attack having Luke Pearson-Taylor lbw, and then picked up his maiden SEC 5-fer when he comprehensively bowled Aman Rao. Wood returning figures of 5-33 from 11 overs, over two spells of bowling. A fine, and eye catching effort from the 19-year-old.
Glamorgan’s innings came to a close when ul Hassan (59) was bowled by Bowley. Glamorgan 128 all out from 39.2 overs. Glamorgan, 268 runs in arrears, were asked to follow on, 16 overs remaining in the day.
In Glamorgan’s 2nd innings Jacob Townsend took over wicketkeeping duties from Harry Swindells. Glamorgan closed on 20-1, that man Wood taking the wicket when he bowled Amir Khan. Going into day three, Glamorgan need a further 248 runs to avoid an innings defeat.
