Welch Drafted For Inaugural Zim Afro T10

Leicestershire CCC batsman Nick Welch has been selected for the inaugural Zim Afro T10 competition, which begins later this month.

The explosive opener will link up with Durban Qalandars for the 10-day tournament, starting in Zimbabwe on 20 July.

Welch was an ever-present in the Foxes’ Vitality Blast campaign this summer, finishing as the side’s third-highest scorer with 234 runs.

The 25-year-old has flourished in short form cricket, averaging 24.71 across his 30 career T20 appearances, striking at a healthy 130.56.

This month’s trip to his homeland will be Welch’s first taste of T10 cricket, with the five-team tournament to follow a double round-robin format, before an elimination stage and final.

Welch will team up with the likes of Asif Ali, Mohammad Amir, and Tim Seifert, while half a dozen Englishmen, including Eoin Morgan, Tymal Mills, and Ravi Bopara will also partake in the first iteration of the competition.

Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, said: “This is a great opportunity for Nick to sharpen his white-ball skills ahead of our One Day Cup campaign next month.

“We know how destructive he can be at the top of the order, and we see this competition as the ideal preparation for him.”

Welch will return to Leicestershire following the conclusion of the tournament on 29 July ahead of the Foxes’ One Day Cup campaign, which begins at The Oval against Surrey on 3 August.
