Wood Takes Five While Scriven Stars With Bat & Ball On Comeback

By Pete Johnson

Leicestershire took on Nottinghamshire at Welbeck CC in round 8 of the SET20. A somewhat experienced Nottinghamshire side beating a comparatively young Leicestershire side by 19 runs.

Sam Wood retired career best SET20 bowling figures for the Foxes taking 5-26 from his allotted 4 overs, while Tom Scriven starred with bat (34, 23b) and ball (3/25) on his comeback from injury.

Roman Walker skippered Leicestershire, won the toss, and chose to insert Nottinghamshire. After just five overs, Nottinghamshire were reduced to 50-5. Wood having demolished the top order, having figures of 4-22 from 3 overs.

The other wicket to fall being taken by Tom Scriven, caught by Wood. Nottinghamshire then posted a partnership of 71 for the 6th wicket, thanks to Jordan Neil and Rob Lord.

Their alliance came to an end when Lord (39) 27b was stumped by Jacob Townsend off young left arm spinner Ali Farooq. Nottinghamshire now on 121-6 from 13.3 overs.

Leicestershire required just a further 5.1 overs to wrap up the innings, Nottinghamshire 151 all out from 18.4 overs. In addition to Wood’s 5 fer, Scriven picked up 3-25 from 3.4 overs.

It was good to see Scriven featuring prominently as he returns from injury. Farooq 2-27 from 3 overs taking the other wickets. Jacob Townsend taking 3 catches behind the wicket, plus a stumping, and 2 outfield catches for Wood, the lean mean Markfield Machine featuring in 7 of the wickets to fall.

In Leicestershire’s reply, Jake Tarling and Scriven posted a 50 partnership (44b) for the 2nd wicket, and had taken the score to 77-1 from 11.2 overs when Scriven (34) 23b perished trying to accelerate the run rate.

In the next over Tarling (38) 45b holed out too. Foxes on 83-3 from 12.2 overs, a further 69 runs needed from 7.4 overs. It proved too much of a challenge for the young Leicestershire side who finished their 20 overs on 132-7, losing by 19 runs.

Nikki Gorantla (27) 20b making a valiant attempt to get the Foxes over the line towards the end of the innings. James Hayes the leading wicket taker for Nottinghamshire with 3-26.
